For a better treatment of diseases in the older population, we must substantially improve our knowledge of how our management of diseases and treatment development changes the way an older person ‘feels, functions or survives’ in daily life, with a special emphasis on mobility and daily function.

We work closely with industry to achieve this:

  • We are involved in Mobilise-D as Parkinson Cohort Lead in the development of digital measure outcomes for the acquisition of gait parameters in the usual environment. The goal is a Qualification Opinion of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for these outcomes.
  • We are involved in IDEA-FAST as co-coordinator of the overall project and as Chief Clinical Investigator for the planned multicenter study with 2000 participants. This project aims at identifying digital endpoints to assess fatigue, sleep and daily function in neurodegenerative disorders and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. The goal is a Qualification Advice of the EMA for these outcomes.
  • We cooperate with several companies in the Investigator-Initiated Projects/Study/Trial (IIT) format. For example we develop an algorithm for the detection of fluctuations in Parkinson patients in the home environment by using mobile health technology, in cooperation with the Kiel Faculty of Technology an app for speech recognition and therapy of Parkinson’s patients, and new assessment methods in the field of mobile sensors.
